Originally formed in 1976, Middlesbrough FC Ladies were then known as Cleveland Spartans. In their 31 years history they have played in several different leagues, where they have enjoyed extensive success - with seven Championships league wins, eight League Cup wins and eight Knock-out cup wins. They have also won the North Riding FA Inter County Cup and the County Ladies cup 5 times including the reserve team winning it in the 2004/05 season. Alongside their list of achievements they were finalists in the Women’s FA Cup in 1982, two FA Cup semi-finals and several quarter-finals. In 1997 they also had the honour and pleasure of actually playing at Wembley before the Boro v Chelsea men’s FA Cup Final, beating Chelsea Ladies 4 – 2 in front of a packed stadium. By 1997 the club officially became Middlesbrough Ladies FC. The team had varying success in the Northern Combination League for the next few years – narrowly missing out on promotion 3 years in a row - until in 2002 they finally clinched the title and stepped up into the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division.


At the start of the first season in the Premier League Northern Division, Middlesbrough Football Club officially ‘adopted’ the ladies team and they are now known as MIDDLESBROUGH FC LADIES. After a few great seasons including taking on Arsenal Ladies (League and FA Cup Winners) in the FA cup at their adopted home of Billingham Synthonia, losing in what was a close fought contest, a crowd of over 500 watching.
